English Final

Posted on June 5th, 2007 in final, The tempest by hana

For the whole year in eight grade, The learning I learned that really makes me think until this day is when I had a class discussion on mercy and revenge. How we started and while we were reading the Tempest book. Now I want to discuss the essential question in my thesis. Is revenge better than mercy? Or is mercy better than revenge? When we had this discussion about this mercy versus revenge in the Tempest. We were discussing about what would you do if you have two daughters and suddenly a man just show your two daughters out of nowhere. We were put in seats until one till ten. One is merciful (that you wont execute him in court) and 10 are you really agree that that man should be executed, and I was the ten.  After what Mr. R told us in class about mercy and revenge, I changed my mind after few days I would go to mercy.  For the next few paragraphs, I hope you (revenge people) would change to mercy.
In mercy, in my own meaning is, that you solve things slowly and don’t really rush. Mercy is mostly people that are patient or merciful (duh). This is how I change to mercy, when my dad was in jail doing nothing wrong, I was really young but as I got older, I felt revenge in my heart, because how can they do that to my father. The chief of police punch him on his eye, how can they beat him up blood shattered and paralyzed for two days. I wonder how can my father didn’t feel really mad or beat them up after six whole years in the prison cell. In 2004, he was out, and how I got to mercy is that if you have revenge in someone you finish him or her off to make you feel better to have the other person feel the same way as you did. However, actually you’re wrong to do this way. How can you make things better? What can it solve? Of course you will feel better for what you did to the other person to have the same feeling as you did. But, then the other person would be mad and would attack you back and forth, again and again. It’s like war: terrorism, racism and everything that is kiosk.  Now back on track in eighth grade. Well, how I found mercy and revenge is from the Tempest book. Of course I didn’t find it in my own but in class. While we were having a discussion in the book, Act 5, scene 1, line 23- 40 , when Ariel continued to say
Ariel: … That if you now beheld them, your affections would become tender.
Prospero: Dost thou think so, spirit?
Ariel: Mine would, sir, were a human.
Prospero: Hast thou, which art but air, a touch, a feeling of their afflictions, and shall not myself, one of their kind, that relish all as sharply passion as they, be kindlier moved than thou art? Though with their high wrongs I am struck to th’ quick, yet with my nobler reason ‘gainst my fury do I take part. Than rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance. They being penitent, the sole drift of my purpose doth extend not a frown further. Go, release them, Ariel. My charms I’ll break, their senses I’ll restore, and they shall be themselves.
This line they were talking about that Prospero wanted to torture them and Ariel stopped him that the three of them had tortured enough and Prospero, feeling merciful, let them free.
Revenge is a feel good, satisfying thing to do. Once you pay them back after what they had done to you, it’s good and they should deserve that and it’s much quicker than mercy. Revenge is also back and forth, constant, repetition and grudge. Revenge is giving out your mad and anger to someone else. That is how I think, so please don’t judge. My mom was having a speech in congress last week, and she said revenge crawls under your skin like the electric flows by. As I was saying, revenge feels satisfying than putting the entire grudge inside when it weighs more and more and more. Lets not say the ‘revenge’ word a lot, it starts to bore me actually. Vengeance is sometimes, lack of education, employment and others. Sometimes, it is also background on what last time happened to you. For vengeance, in the Tempest book, when Caliban wanted to kill Prospero for everything what Caliban helped him and Prospero just torture him, he felt vengeance to Prospero. Prospero had warned him that if Caliban didn’t follow his orders he will be tortured but Caliban did not listen to him. He is a child that is a spoilt brat. He wants to get what he wants. And what Caliban wants is, to kill Prospero. But, he didn’t manage to kill him because Prospero set him free. However, I didn’t really get the last part of the book, but I think they were all happy and it was a happy ending.  So if you stick to mercy, what Prospero had done, it would be a really understanding on what the situation is, why Caliban is mad. In addition, things were settled. This also goes to real life, you can also do the right thing, not to be innocent but it’s much better doing the wrong.
Last but not least on why mercy is way better than revenge. Remember what I ask you the first paragraph? You don’t need to read the first paragraph on what I am said, I will tell you again. Okay, the question is, you have two daughters and suddenly someone you don’t know just came and shot your two daughters that you love. What would you do? At instant, you would want to execute him right?! Of course you do! On the second thought, you should understand on how the other persons way of life. That person, the killer, first when he was just seven years old, he is living with his dad, his dad abuses him and comes back home drunk. That killer, grew up with this group of gangs, because he has no other place to go, he smuggled some drugs, shoplift, and he tries to stop getting in drugs but he was addicted to it. He suddenly went drunk and didn’t have any intention to kill your two lovable daughters and suddenly the society wants to execute him on what he has done. It is the city or country’s fault for not having enough jobs, schools and also hospitals. This idea is from the class discussion and it wasn’t really my idea. This idea was in class discussions. I am not that smart thinker. This idea was the thing that makes me to think of how things are solved. In addition if most people choose mercy, it wouldn’t have so much war going on.
In general, what I learned is mercy is better and reading the Tempest book, although it was not the best book that I have read but it was the idea that brought me to thinking that mercy is better. I hope you all followed the way I did.

Muse-Sunburn

Come waste your millions here
Secretly she sneers
Another corporate show
A guilty conscience grows
I'll feel a guilty conscience grow
I'll feel a guilty conscience grow
She burns like the sun
And I cant look away
And she'll burn our horizons make no mistake
Come let the truth be shared
No-one ever dared
To break these endless lies
Secretly she cries
She burns like the sun
And I cant look away
And she'll burn our horizons make no mistake

And I'll hide from the world
Behind a broken frame
And I'll burn forever
I cant face the shame

And I'll hide from the world
Behind a broken frame
And I'll burn forever
I cant face the shame

MUSE has been my all time favourite band since almost 3 years now. This is one of their video clip and the lyrics. I am using this piece of work to explain what other people would think about the video, song and lyrics. I hope you would understand on how I am explaining it.

In my opinion, for a guy to see this video clip, they would maybe see the girl is weak and can't handle the burden what she saw. Moreover, the girl was in the mirror the last part, she was also trapped and unable to do anything and the boy in the video clip is helpless.

The next one is if a royal person and is educated sees this video clip, firstly they would be impressed by the computerizing of the video clip of the band in the mirror. Also, they would see that how the lyrics and the songs are connected. I can't really explain it but you can relate to both of them also to the video clip. The lyrics for an educated person would see that he is ashamed that she kept a secret when it says ‘Come let the truth be shared No-one ever dared To break these endless lies Secretly she cries' it means that the girl doesn't want to tell her secret because she is scared.

If an uneducated and poor person sees this video clip they would only focus more on how the song goes not the lyrics. They would choose more of their type of song. When they see the house, they would think the house worth a lot of money in contrast the royal person would think it's a cheap price of money.

I picture that if a native person sees the video clip, they would think that the computerizing would like magic that they only appeared in the mirror. If a person that is living in a city or that lives in a house not a hut would think it is computerizing when the people are in the mirror.

Poetry Unit Reflective Journal

Posted on May 7th, 2007 in Reflective Journal by hana

To compare all of the three quarters I have to admit that Poetry Unit was the best unit of all. At first, I thought poetry was dull and boring because for me, it sounds you had to think really hard and reading other poems is tedious, I couldn’t understand a thing. However, poetry is not just rhyme things, having to know exact meter or sonnets. It’s not as writing in perfect sentences. They are free thought and expresses meaning in different ways. As in simile, metaphor, etc. Although I am very bad at writing essays, poetry doesn’t need perfect grammar or sentence. That’s why poetry is really fun. You can write anything and it doesn’t need full writing. In class, after we have written poetry in class, we have to stand in front of class read our poems. Also, Mr. R would read out loud on the students that have done very well. After we have finished writing poetry; we had poetry night at the end of the quarter with our poetry books. During the poetry night, some students performed their poems in front of friends and family. After we have finished this unit, we have to reflect the poetry unit in form of ESLR’s.

I felt I was a Self-Directed Learner when I wrote poems. I have accepted responsibility in my own learning. To explain this meaning in my own words, I am doing my own responsibility with my own knowledge. By proving I did this, I wrote different kinds of poems, for example sight, smell, haikus, etc. I wrote for instance, sight, you see an apple. If you are a novice for poetry, for example, you wrote on how is an apple like. You would write ?its shiny red outer layer and white inner layer’. However, poetry is asking you, how can you describe it? How does the apple remind of? How does the apple feel? Like that, it’s not if what you see is what you write. It’s what you see and try to be in an apple’s shoes. In addition, if you write an apple is shiny and red. I know it sounds lame but that’s how detailed it can be and sounds very unique. If you start an apple is shiny, does it sound boring? Because everyone’s knows that and it’s like a clich鮠To demonstrate this, I would show my poem for smell:-

Trapped

A smell of soft baby flesh,

Trapped in a breathless mirror,

Hair cold rush with jasmine flower,

Eyes clear as salt falling down his cheeks,

Shoes shine fresh water,

Clothes flashing in aroma perfume,

Powder filled his young face,

Mutters meaningful words.

My poem is not that perfect, but you could understand how it’s written. This poem is from a picture that Mr. R gives out and we had to write using the five sensors. As I wrote more and more poems, I realized I have a similarity between each poem and I was getting better at writing. Every time we wrote poems in class. Our teacher, Mr. R would check and ask us to rewrite/redo/revise/edit our poems. Also, for Self-Directed Learner, I have done a book by myself and design it in my own way. I have also illustrated pictures for each poem. If I had more time doing the book, I would have a better grade. In addition, I shouldn’t have done last minute for the book. I should have time management so I don’t need to write 10 poems in one day. Overall, for my writing of poems and creating book, I thought I was okay. If I grade myself I think I have 85%, B. However, I think I should do better at writing because I haven’t had enough time.

Most of time, we had class discussion. As in, reading in front of the class. When I was reading, I felt I was an Involved Citizen. I demonstrated responsibility in active decision-making. This means that I choose what is best for me. To show I did this, I chose a poem I should read in front of the class. Also, when we first had the introduction to poetry, we had to write a short sentence on what is poetry. Firstly, each student wrote down a sentence and they pass their paper clockwise to the next student and the next student has to create a new sentence related to the sentence. At that time, I felt I chose my best sentence and wrote it down. I have realized since I first started to write my first poetry few months ago and now. I could see big changes. I realized that my poetry is better than last time because last time, my poems were mostly clich頡nd now, not that many. I have also realized that poetry is not very straight forward. The meaning is hidden between each word. I also did draw some pictures to describe the emotions. If I haven’t done poetry before, mostly my poems would be clich鮠I am glad I knew poetry before. I thought I did Good overall. I would grade myself 90%, A. However, I need to work on certain areas, more of explaining things in an understanding way.

I thought I was an Effective Communicator by showing creative talents to convey ideas. In my own words, I showed original ability to show ideas from my view of point. For example, I drew pictures of a boy that is trapped in a mirror as I have shown the poem above in second paragraph. I also thought I was an Effective Communicator because in Teen Life I communicate in the internet and we worked on ?how drugs are related to terrorism’ and we communicated with several different countries and collaborate with the groups we are working on. In Poetry Night, I read to all the audience and I have communicated my poem to them. Without writing, there is no communication and understanding of the poem. In order to have a very strong poem, I did different kinds of things explaining poems. I realized the poems I did here and in my previous school is different. I felt that the poems in my previous school were not as thorough as now. I could see the difference between two poems from last time to now. I also need to work on my explanation is not as well though and it’s kind of hard because English is my second language. I should work on the teen life poem because I didn’t reach my explanation clearly. If I had time to rewrite, I would use that poem for my group. In general, for Effective Communicator, I thought I did Okay. I would grade myself 87.5%, B+. I need to work more on my writing poetry.

While I was writing and brainstorming poems, I felt I was a Critical Thinker. I have built meaning and understanding using prior knowledge and new information. This means that I am learning new things and discovered different things. To prove I did this, I have learned different kinds of writings and expressions. For example, rather than comparing things to animals I compare with the surroundings. I was thinking how am I going to make this poem interesting? A lot of questions came to my head and these questions made me feel I was a Critical Thinker. I did this by knowledge of doing different things in poetry. For instance, I haven’t written a poem using sonnets. If I haven’t done poetry in class, then I would think poetry is boring and hard. On the whole, I thought I did a Good. I would grade myself 93%, A-. I didn’t think I did Very Good because I feel it is little information that I have seek.

Demonstrating ability to work both independently and collaboratively is an Academic Achiever that I thought I did well while writing by myself and reading my poems out loud in the class. Demonstrating ability to work independently and collaboratively in my own words means, you can work alone and work in a group. I showed you this by working on the teen life collaboratively and writing my poems independently. Also, answering questions and vice versa. To show I did this, I worked by myself alone at home and write my own poetry at home and at school, I shared with my classmate and read out loud my poem. As I did more and more of writing and reading out loud, I felt comfortable and better than unaccustomed at first. If I have worked on not being really shy in front of class, I would do better. Overall, I thought I did not bad. By grading myself, I thought I would have 95%, A-. I would have to improve next time.

The Tempest:Act 1,section 2

Posted on April 26th, 2007 in The tempest by hana
  • Lines I don’t understand

-act 1, scene 2, line 493-497

This gallant which thou seest

Was in the wrack; and, but he’s something stained

With grief - that’s beauty’s canker - thou might’st

   call him

A goodly person. He hath lost his fellows

And strays about to find ‘em.

-act 1, scene 2, line 551-554

There’s nothing ill can dwell in such a temple.

If the ill spirit have so fair a house,

Good things will strive to dwell with ‘t.

Lines I do understand

-act 1, scene 2, line 534-537

Why speaks my father so ungently? This

Is the third man that e’er I saw, the first

That e’er I sighed for. Pity move my father

To be inclined my way

Translation in my own words

Why are you speaking to my father so rude? You

Are the third man I saw in this island. Persuade my father

To be inclined in my way.

-act 1, scene 2, line 582-585

Thou think’st there is no more such shapes as he,

Having seem but him and Caliban. Foolish wench,

To th’ most of men this is Caliban,

And they to him are angels.

Translation in my own words

You think there is no such creature than him,

Having seem but him and Caliban. Foolish people,

Out of all men, this is Caliban,

And to him all of them are angels.

Questions

-Is Ferdinand really bad? Or prospero just treat him like a slave to protect his daughter?

-Do you think Caliban is really mean and evil?

Wilfred Owen

Posted on March 6th, 2007 in poetry by hana

Wilfred Owen was born on March 8, 1893. He went to the University of London. In 1915, Wilfred Owen was interested of learning about World War 1 and enlisted the Artists Rifles group. After he trained in England, he became the second lieutenant. Wilfred was wounded in 1917 and went to hospital near Edinburgh. There, he met a patient that was a poet, Siegfried Sassoon. That time, Wilfred wrote some poems about the war. It was mostly about horrors of warfare. Owen was awarded Military Cross for bravery. In 1918, fourth of November, he was killed and only at the age of 25. On November 11, his parents got the news of their son. In December 1920, they collected Wilfred Owen’s poem.

Futility

A-Move him into the sun—
B-Gently its touch awoke him once,
C-At home, whispering of fields unsown.
B-Always it woke him, even in France,
D-The kind old sun will know.

E-Think how it wakes the seeds—
F-Woke once the clays of a cold star.
G-Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides
H-Full-nerved, still warm, too hard to stir?
I-Was it for this the clay grew tall?
J-—O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
I-To break earth’s sleep at all?

At first, when I read this poem, I didn’t understand a single- thing he said. However, as I read a few times over, I understood kind of what the story meant. In my perspective, this poem or story that he’s trying to reach is no matter what you do, is you’re trying to injure the world, it would stay the same. Except for the sun that would rise everyday. Here are some figurative language he used.

Meter (8) - Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now

Rhyme- Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now

Alliteration - Woke once the clays of a cold star.

Anne Frank Write-up

Posted on January 23rd, 2007 in Anne Frank by hana

The symbols we utilized for this iMovie were the Star of David, which represents the Jews as a group, an actual cattle carriage from the holocaust, which represents control and power, the smokestacks at Auschwitz, which represent loss and agony, Anne’s diary, which represents hope and good will, the tattoo that all Jews were scarred with upon their entry to a concentration camp, which, along with the cattle carriage, also represents power and control, We also utilized Hitler, as a symbol of hatred and anger, and finally, an actual memorial to Anne and Margot Frank, which symbolizes remembrance. The sound we utilized for our iMovie was the song, Face Down, by the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, which conveys a sense of oppression, which is what all the Jews underwent during Hitler’s régime. These symbols can influence audiences by shocking them at just how atrociously the Jews were treated, and the song I chose can, as was said, captivate the audience with a sense of oppression. By creating the actual iMovie, which is 53 seconds long, and in my opinion, actually quite captivating, Fraser illustrated the meanings of these symbols and the song mentioned above.

Fraser believes that the song, Face Down, was very powerful because of its sense of oppression and the lyrics themselves represent what Anne must’ve been going through. As a symbol, for me, the most powerful was the photo of the Auschwitz smokestacks, as they, as was previously noted, give a sense of loss and tragedy, and press on the fact that the Jews suffered tremendous loss.

I think that we should receive an “A” on this project, as we put a lot of work into creating the iMovie, finding pictures, and completing this very write-up.

We have written about 5 ESLR bullet points that we used as a group to accomplish our task, and we have given specific examples for each bullet point.

For contribution to the final project, Fraser completed the iMovie, this checklist, and the ESLR write-up, I found pictures for the iMovie, and Farhad also found pictures for the iMovie.

~Teen Life~

Posted on January 18th, 2007 in ~Teen Life~ by hana

Hey … my name is Nurul Hana. You can just call me Hana. I’m 14 years old from Malaysia., . I am blessed to live in an international community. . When I was in 4th till 7th grade, I was kind of into sports. Including track, high jump and long jump, that’s the 3 things I was competing in previous school. In 7th grade, I did high jump and long jump. I got 3rd place for high jump 2nd place for long jump. Art is my life. Whenever I’m free, I  take time to draw anime. I also like to try and learn different types of drawing. Books are my passion as well. So far, I’ve read series of collection of Roald Dahl , Harry Potter, The Kite Runner, and some Malay books. Hmmm… movies, I do love movies but my favorite is comedy and action. My favorite movie so far is Inside Man. I don’t know if you would like it. I also love football. I don’t play it but I love to watch it. I started watching since last year, the FIFA world cup I support for France, but I don’t want to quarrel bad things about each others country. But I would like to know what country you supported, not say bad things to them. I didn’t really remember all the players but I still do like other footballers in other countries. I also like Arsenal although I’m not really into it but I support it. All this football came from my brother-in-law. Thanks to him I’m into football. I have 5 siblings. 1 brother and 4 sisters, I’m the youngest of all. We are really close to each other. I can be quiet person or the hyper active one. If the person I feel comfortable to talk to, then maybe I’ll be a hyper active person. Depends on my mood! I love music. I actually can’t live without it. Here are some English, Indonesian and Malay bands, (English bands)- Muse (my favorite band 2 years now), Eminem, Orson, Radiohead, Oasis, The Strokes, Dashboard Confessional, Travis, Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, Everclear, The Thrills, My Morning Jacket, Silverchair, Stone Temple Pilots, Snow Patrol, Sixpence None of The Richer, The Killers, The White Stripes,  Coldplay, The Coral, Switchfoot, Modest Mouse, Incubus, New Radicals, 1000 Clowns, Rooney, Aqualung, Blink 182, Bowling for Soup,Ash,Stone Sour, Green Day, Jem, Ok Go, Cake, Cardigans, Garbage, Death Cab for Cutie,U2 etc. (Indonesian and Malay bands-) Padi, Dewa, Peter Pan, Sheila on 7, OAG, Samson, Coklat, etc. Most of the songs came from my siblings. If I’m with my siblings, I would always be weird, hyper active and funny.

One of the issues that concern me at my age is about different culture and people. When I was in public school in Malaysia, although we have 3 different cultures but I realize that we are falling apart. I have a lot of Malaysian friends but I can see they have their own groups. Not all the people do that, they also have togetherness inside them. I don’t know why they even have that feeling of racism? When I went to US, I felt I was the minority because I was the only Malaysian out of the whole middle school. But I was glad that they treated me nicely but I was much quieter because I wasn’t used to present in front of class. People think I was a quiet person even my close friends thought I was quiet. But when I went to international community, I got to see the difference between both schools. If we have a lot of different culture, we can collaborate with each other. If people prejudge them, then there won’t be any racism.

Another issue that also concerns me is about the society.
Malaysia’s crime rate has increased from my perspective.  Why I say that is because, when I was in 1st grade, I could walk with my neighbour 5 minutes from my house. Now, I see newspapers a lot of people get killed and you need a man to guide you anywhere! However, I think maybe some places not when a lot of people are there.

social studies *notes about the Aztecs*

Posted on December 12th, 2006 in Social Studies Block-H by hana

Step 1:Where did the Aztecs originally live? What prompted them to relocate? Where did they end up and why? Chose an artifact, which you feel best, represents this event. Support your choice

They live in Central Mexico in Tenochtitlan. They relocated because Tenoch had a vision that god told him to go to a swampy land to find an eagle. They were glad that the god helped them. So, they thank the god by doing human sacrifices.

Step 2:

The Aztecs ended up in the middle of a lake and built their new capital
Tenochtitlan. What were the pros and cons of settling in the middle of a lake? Describe the lay of the land and chose an image for your exhibit.

Cons- the edge of Chinampas (planted trees helping the soil to stick together) was surrounded by the lake

Pros- they’re city grown stronger. Warriors of Aztec gained power for bordering territories.

Step 3:Which gods were worshiped? The pyramids were built for what purpose?

The main gods that were worshipped are, Tezcatlipoca, Quetzacoatl, Tlaloc and Chalchiuhtlicue. They built pyramids to honor the sun god and to find the exact measure of time

Step 4:Who are the different members of Aztec society? What are their roles? Choose an artifact that represents the social order of Aztec society. There are 3 main members. They are slaves, commoners and nobility.

Slaves: poor parents sold assured certain period of time.

Commoners: give lifetime of ownership of land but the lower class group isn’t able to do that.

Nobility: The most respected nobility were the warriors and the priests.

Step 5:The Aztecs have a spoken language. What was it called? Did they use any other forms of communication? Include an example of either written or visual language of the Aztecs.

The Aztecs spoke Nahuatl, where it belongs to Indian Language. They also used writing as a tool of communicating. They drew pictographs through writing. Some pictographs signify symbols while the other is represented with sound of syllables

Step 6:

How did the Aztecs grow food and what was their main crop? Did they trade and with whom? Did they have a currency (money)? Find an image for your exhibit about making a living Aztec style.

The Aztecs food was a thin pancake (tlaxcalli) they only raise meat for dogs and turkey. They did have currency money. If someone breaks the code, they had to pay fees and fines.

Step 7:Discuss the Impact of Spanish Contact 1519 from both the Aztec point of view and the Spanish point of view. Find an image depicting this event.

Warriors of Aztecs attacked the Spaniards. The Terrible Defeat was lost by Cortes. Cortes wept and was called the Sad Night.

Step 8:Discuss La Malinche or Dona Marina. Debate her positive/negative impact on
Mexico past and present. What does the term Mestizo refer to? What influences remain today from Aztec culture of the past?

I thought Marina was a positive impact for Mexico. Well, she was courageous and loyal girl. She helped
Mexico change from bad to good. Mestizo refers to the person that’s mixed European and Native African ancestry.
